Why moringa?

Everything you need to know about moringa — the tree, the leaf, what it contains and the simplest ways to eat it.

Moringa oleifera

The tree

What is moringa?

Moringa oleifera is a fast-growing, hardy tree with small, oval leaves on feathery, fern-like branches. Those leaves have long been cooked as a leafy vegetable in homes across India and South Asia.

Dried and finely milled, the leaves become moringa powder — an easy way to bring this familiar green into everyday food.

Only the leaves are used in HATTAKATTA Moringa Powder.

Origins

Where it comes from

Moringa oleifera is native to the sub-Himalayan regions of north-western India. Over centuries it spread across tropical and sub-tropical regions of Asia, Africa and Latin America, and it is now cultivated widely, with India one of the world's major growers.

The tree is hardy and tolerates heat and dry spells, which is one reason it is such a familiar sight in Indian courtyards, farm borders and kitchen gardens.

Nutritional profile

What's in a moringa leaf?

Moringa leaves have been widely studied for their nutrient composition. Dried moringa leaf is naturally a source of:

Plant protein

Dried leaves contain a meaningful share of protein for a leafy green.

Dietary fibre

Like most leafy greens, moringa leaf naturally contains fibre.

Minerals

Including calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium.

Vitamin A precursors

Carotenoids such as beta-carotene, which the body can convert into vitamin A.

Plant compounds

Polyphenols such as quercetin and kaempferol, studied in nutrition research.

Our own numbers

Per-serving values for HATTAKATTA come from laboratory analysis of our product. Link your lab report here.

Nutrient levels vary a lot with soil, climate, leaf age, drying method and storage, and some vitamins (such as vitamin C) drop substantially during drying. That is why we show values measured on our own product — see the nutrition panel on each product page — rather than borrowing figures from elsewhere.

Ingredient sourcing

Describe the region(s) where your moringa is grown, who grows it, and how you select and work with growers.
